What You'll Learn

1. What is the Chartered Accountancy (CA) course?

The Chartered Accountancy (CA) course is one of India's most prestigious professional qualifications, conducted by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). It prepares students to become experts in Accounting, Auditing, Taxation, Finance, Business Laws, Corporate Governance, Financial Reporting, and Business Advisory. A Chartered Accountant plays a vital role in helping businesses, governments, and individuals make informed financial decisions.

2. Who can join the CA course?

Students who have passed Class 10 can provisionally register for the CA Foundation Course with ICAI.

They can start preparing for CA Foundation while studying in Class 11 and 12. However, to appear for the CA Foundation examination, they must fulfil ICAI's eligibility requirements, including appearing for the Class 12 examination.

Graduates and Postgraduates who meet ICAI's prescribed marks criteria can enter the CA course directly at the Intermediate level through the Direct Entry Route.

Under the current ICAI scheme, the eligibility includes:

  • Commerce Graduates/Postgraduates: Minimum 55% marks

  • Graduates/Postgraduates other than Commerce: Minimum 60% marks

  • Candidates who have passed the Intermediate-level examination of ICSI or ICMAI, subject to ICAI's applicable requirements.

3. What are the stages of the Chartered Accountancy course?

Under the latest ICAI Scheme of Education and Training, the CA course consists of four major stages:

• CA Foundation – Entry-level programme after Class XII.

• CA Intermediate – Advanced professional studies in accounting, taxation, auditing, finance and business laws.

• Practical Training (Articleship) – Two years of structured practical training under a practicing Chartered Accountant.

• CA Final – The final stage that develops advanced professional and strategic competencies required for independent practice and leadership roles.

4. How long does it take to become a Chartered Accountant?

The duration depends on when a student clears each examination. For students joining immediately after Class XII and passing all examinations in the first attempt, the minimum duration is approximately 3½ to 4 years, including the mandatory practical training.

  • Strong earning potential

  • Ethical and professional values

  • Opportunity to become an entrepreneur or independent professional

For students who enjoy commerce, finance, business, and analytical thinking, CA is one of the most rewarding career choices.

9. Why should I choose Chartered Accountancy over other professional courses?

Chartered Accountancy is more than an academic qualification—it is a profession built on knowledge, integrity, and trust.

A Chartered Accountant is respected not only for technical expertise but also for ethical standards, professional judgment, and business leadership. The course combines classroom learning, professional examinations, practical training, and continuous skill development, making CA one of the most comprehensive and rewarding career paths in the field of commerce and finance.

Whether your goal is to work with leading multinational companies, start your own professional practice, become a CFO, advise businesses, or contribute to the nation's economic growth, the Chartered Accountancy course provides a strong foundation for lifelong success.

10. What are the different routes to pursue CA?

Students can pursue CA through three flexible routes, depending on their career goals:

1. Full-Time CA: Students can focus primarily on the CA course after Class 12, without pursuing a separate undergraduate degree. This allows them to concentrate on CA studies and complete the professional qualification as efficiently as possible.

2. CA + Undergraduate Degree: Students can pursue CA alongside a B.Com or another undergraduate degree. This provides the advantage of earning a graduation degree while simultaneously progressing towards the CA qualification.

3. CA After Graduation: Students who complete their undergraduate degree can pursue CA through ICAI's Direct Entry Route, subject to the prescribed eligibility criteria.

The right route depends on a student's career goals, academic preferences and preferred pace of study. CA can be pursued successfully through any of these pathways with the right planning and consistent preparation.
